Online Sale of Endangered Species

Recently, the Department found some parties selling endangered species through the internet, such as tortoise, parrots, iguana, python, coral, giant clams etc. Please be reminded that, trading endangered species without proper licences or without proper documentary proof of the live specimen is from artificial propagated or breeding sources, either though internet or by any other means may contravene Hong Kong Legislation.
According to the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, Cap. 586, except under exemption conditions, a licence to be issued in advance by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for the import, introduction from the sea, export, re-export or possession of specimens of a scheduled species, whether alive, dead, its parts or derivatives (including medicines). Any person contravening the requirements of Cap. 586 will be prosecuted and is liable on conviction to a maximum fine of five million Hong Kong dollars (HK$ 5,000,000), to imprisonment for two years and mandatory forfeiture of the specimens.
