Hong Kong is located on the coast of Southeast China which is on the border of the Oriental and Eastern Palearetic biogeographical regions. Hong Kong is a major stopover point of the Asia's migration routes. The wide varieties of local habitats contribute to the diversity of the birds. These habitats include shrublands, forests, rocky shores, farmlands, and wetlands such as mangroves, mudflats, reedbeds, fishponds and gei wais (inter-tidal shrimp ponds).
Up to 2009, Hong Kong has some 490 bird species, representing one-third of the species recorded in China. Among these species, about 20% are residents, 30% are winter visitors, 40% are passage migrants and 5% are summer visitors as well as remaining about 5% are vagrant/occasional visitors.
