How many dolphins are there in Hong Kong waters and in the Pearl River Estuary?

  • Chinese White Dolphin
    Abundance was highest in the North Lantau area in all seasons
  • At least 1200 dolphins found in the Pearl River Estuary and Hong Kong waters
  • The estimate does not include the dolphins found in the western Estuary, near Macau and Zhuhai, and therefore only represents a minimum

Photo-identification Estimates

  • More than 300 individual dolphins were identified from over 30,000 photos
  • Some individuals were identified up to 70 times, most dolphins were only seen once or a few times
  • Newly identified dolphins are still being added to the photo-identification catalogue
