Conservation Status

What is the threatened status of the world's coral reefs?

  • 58% of the world's reefs are at moderate to high risk from human disturbance

  • Overexploitation of marine resources (including destructive fishing practices) and coastal development are the greatest threats

Percentage of Reefs at High, Medium and Low Risk (Bryant et al, 1998)
  • Reefs in Southeast Asia are the most disturbed

  • More than 80% of them are at risk and over half (56%) are at high risk

  • Overfishing, destructive fishing practices, sedimentation, and pollution associated with coastal development are the biggest threats
