Classification

This is an artificial system for the orderly storage and retrieval of information about specific organisms. There are millions of different kinds of organisms. Before we can refer to each one of them, we need to give them a name and preferably an allotted place in a classification system which shows its relationship with other organisms. Some terminologies are used to describe these organisms. The classification system is needed to facilitate exchange of knowledge and ideas in research and teaching.

Classification system in use today was developed in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl von Linne (known as Linnaeus).
