Turbinaria peltata (Esper, 1794)

Family: Dendrophylliidae
Genera: Turbinaria
Species: peltata
Field characteristics: Corals are in laminar form, composed of several plates stacking onto each other. Some colonies have only a single plate with undulating margins, giving rise to a bowl shape growth form. The plates are fairly thick and large, polyps are well separated and are extended during the day. Sometimes these plate-like colonies have columnar upright growth. This is especially seen in colonies over 1 meter in size. Colours range from pink to purple.
Abundance: Common
Distribution : Widespread distribution, mostly recorded from the northeastern and eastern waters. Large colonies are observed in the Marine Parks in the northeastern part of Hong Kong waters.
