Hong Kong Reef Check 2004

Background

In collaboration with the Reef Check Foundation, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has coordinated annual survey of corals in Hong Kong (Reef Check) since 2000. The Hong Kong Reef Check is part of the global programme to promote sustainable management of coral reefs. Reef Check in Hong Kong serves 2 major functions:

Corals

(a) to raise public awareness on the ecological importance of coral reefs and the need for coral conservation and

(b) to provide updated information on local coral for conservation and management purposes.

The survey in 2004 has made two records. The number of voluntary divers participated (over 330) and coral sites surveyed (33) are by far the highest since Reef Check first launched in Hong Kong in 1997. We have invited more interested group for participation and organized technical trainings for team scientists and team members on coral identification and data collection.
