Preliminary abundance estimate of finless porpoise in Hong Kong waters indicates a peak abundance of 152 animals in spring, while autumn is the low season for porpoises with an estimate of 55 animals. In addition, preliminary estimate indicated that there are at least 147 porpoises occurring in Chinese waters just south of Hong Kong, which makes the minimum population size estimate to be 217 animals. However, this could be probably an underestimate because finless porpoises are very difficult to spot on surveys and some areas have not been extensively studied.
