The First Record in China of the Firefly Genus Pteroptyx

In October 2009, the Beetle Working Group of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department found an unidentified firefly species in the Hong Kong Wetland Park. Subsequent taxonomic studies revealed that the firefly species belongs to the genus Pteroptyx which has not been recorded in China before. With thorough study of relevant scientific articles and confirmation from international experts of firefly taxonomy, it is confirmed that this Pteroptyx sp. is new to science. To learn more about this interesting firefly species, please check out issue no. 19 of the AFCD Newsletter Hong Kong Biodiversity.
