AFCD investigates into abnormal death of chickens
Saturday, August 9, 2014

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) is investigating into the abnormal death of chickens at a farm in San Tin, Yuen Long. Initial test results revealed that the chickens were not infected with avian influenza.

The owner of the farm reported to the AFCD today (August 9) that death of chickens has been observed since yesterday (August 8) afternoon. A Veterinary Officer of the AFCD immediately carried out on-site investigation.

The incident involved about 1,000 dead chickens. Samples taken from the farm were tested negative for avian influenza by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).

Investigation by the AFCD is still ongoing and further testing will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death. The sale of chicken by the farm will be suspended pending the completion of investigation.

Officers of the AFCD have contacted the persons-in-charge of all local poultry farms and confirmed there were no irregularities.  The farmers have been reminded to report any abnormal deaths of chickens promptly.

The AFCD will continue to implement the prevention and control measures against avian influenza and maintain close liaison with chicken farmers to ensure chickens put on the market have passed avian influenza virus test.
