Friday, February 6, 2015

An injured Chinese white dolphin has been rescued off Shek Pik, Lantau, this afternoon (February 6) and transferred to Ocean Park Hong Kong for treatment.

A spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) said, "Officers of the AFCD, together with experts from the Ocean Park Conservation Foundation Hong Kong and veterinarians of Ocean Park, found the injured dolphin near Shek Pik during a search in the waters off South Lantau. The rescue team of Ocean Park captured it."

Initial examination by veterinarians on the spot found the dolphin is a male and measures 234 centimetres in length and weighs 135 kilograms. There are multiple wounds on the back of the dolphin, with the largest one near the fluke.

The dolphin has been transferred to Ocean Park for veterinary care and treatment. It will be looked after and closely monitored by veterinarians at the park.

The injured dolphin was found off Tai O on January 16. Since receipt of the report, officers of the AFCD have been deployed to monitor the condition of the dolphin. Joint rescue operations with the rescue team of Ocean Park were mounted from January 20 onwards.

At the same time, the AFCD liaised closely with the experts and scientists to work out a practicable rescue plan that could take into account both the safety of the rescue team as well as the possible risks to the injured dolphin.
