Draft map of Brothers Marine Park available for public inspection
Friday, February 12, 2016

The Government published in the gazette today (February 12) a notice about the draft map of the proposed Brothers Marine Park. The draft map was prepared by the Country and Marine Parks Authority (the Authority) in accordance with the Marine Parks Ordinance.

A spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) said that in compliance with the Environmental Permit conditions set out for the Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities Project related to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, a new marine park in the vicinity of The Brothers islands shall be designated for the conservation of Chinese white dolphins and enhancement of marine resources.

The proposed Brothers Marine Park covers an area of about 970 hectares, with its boundary based on scientific records which confirm the waters around The Brothers as an important Chinese white dolphin habitat.

The spokesman said, “Upon the designation of The Brothers Marine Park, activities inside the park will be regulated by the Marine Parks Ordinance and Marine Parks and Marine Reserves Regulation.

“Management measures including restrictions on vessel speed, control of fishing activities, and regulation of recreational activities inside the marine park can help enhance fisheries resources and provide an improved habitat for marine lives. It would be conducive to the conservation of Chinese white dolphins in the long run.”

Public can inspect the draft map, together with other related information, free-of-charge during office hours at the designated offices for 60 days from today. The designated offices are available on the AFCD website (
www.afcd.gov.hk/english/country/cou_vis/cou_vis_mar/cou_vis_mar_wha/mp_bro_draftmap.html).

Copies of the draft map are also available for sale to the public at $37 each at AFCD headquarters, 5/F, Cheung Sha Wan Government Offices, 303 Cheung Sha Wan Road, Kowloon.

"Any person aggrieved by the draft map may submit a written statement of objection, stating the nature of and the reasons for the objection, and proposed alteration to the draft map, if any, to the Country and Marine Parks Authority at the AFCD, at 5/F, Cheung Sha Wan Government Offices, 303 Cheung Sha Wan Road, Kowloon, within 60 days from the date of gazettal," said the spokesman.
