AFCD seizes animal traps
Friday, February 19, 2016

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) seized several animal traps and meat suspected to be from wild animals from Shek Lei Hang Village, Kwai Chung, today (February 19).

The AFCD received a report from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) earlier that a large cage trap was found on a hillside at Shek Lei Hang Village, Kwan Chung. Investigations have been conducted with the assistance of the SPCA.

The AFCD searched a fenced-off area near the hillside today and seized a large cage trap, eight small cage traps, a gin trap and several pieces of frozen meat suspected to be from wild animals. Follow-up investigations are being carried out.

An AFCD spokesman said that no person shall, except in accordance with a special permit, hunt or wilfully disturb, sell or export, possess or control any protected wild animal. Otherwise they will be in breach of the Wild Animals Protection Ordinance and be liable to a maximum fine of $100,000 and imprisonment for one year.

The AFCD spares no effort in combating illegal hunting of wild animals, and conducts frequent patrols in countryside areas. Members of the public are urged to make a report to 1823 if suspected illegal hunting activities or animal traps are found.
