Thursday, August 24, 2017
Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, Dr Leung Siu-fai, visited the farms and fish pond affected by Typhoon Hato this afternoon (August 24). Farmers and fish farmers can register for assistance from emergency relief funds starting from tomorrow (August 25).
Dr Leung visited two farms in Fung Kat Heung and a pond fish farm in Lut Chau, Yuen Long. He said after the visits, "Typhoon Hato brought about strong wind and high tides yesterday (August 23). According to the preliminary investigation of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), about 300 hectares of farmland, 0.9 hectares mariculture rafts, and about 170 hectares of fish ponds were affected by the typhoon, especially farms in the New Territories and mariculture rafts at the southern waters, and fish ponds at Lut Chau and Lau Fau Shan in Yuen Long. They suffered different levels of damage, and some of which were severe."
"We will launch an operation to provide relief to the affected farmers and fish farmers. The AFCD will provide financial relief for affected farmers and fish farmers who can register for assistance from emergency relief funds from tomorrow to September 4. An appropriate amount of the relief fund would be released to eligible farmers and fish farmers according to established criteria."
"We also contacted local chicken and pig farms, and have not received any report of these farmers seriously affected by the typhoon so far."
After each typhoon or natural disaster, the AFCD staff will contact farmers and fish farmers to know the situation of their farmland, fish rafts and fish ponds to assess the resultant damage.
Farmers who wish to apply for emergency relief funds should register at the office of the AFCD's Agricultural Extension Section at 5/F, Yuen Long Government Offices, 2 Kiu Lok Square, Yuen Long, or call 2476 2424 for enquiries.
