Thursday, March 23, 2000
Local residents and tourists are welcomed to join in exploring the beauty of our marine environment as a roving exhibition on marine conservation moves on to the Hong Kong International Airport.
The exhibition is organised by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
It will be staged at the Passenger Terminal Building (Departures Level) of the airport, commencing today (March 23) until the end of April this year.
Speaking at a launching ceremony, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, Dr Wong Fook-yee, said: "Hong Kong, with its geographical advantages and subtropical climate, beholds a rich and varied marine ecology.
"It includes more than 800 species of marine fish and sea mammals such as Chinese white dolphin and finless porpoise.
"This remarkably diverse marine habitat is one of Hong Kong's invaluable resources."
The roving exhibition aims to introduce to the public the beautiful seascape, the majestic coast and the widely varying marine ecology of Hong Kong.
"It serves to enhance public understanding of our marine environment and to relay messages on the importance of its conservation to local people and tourists alike.
"It will be a great help in promoting eco-tourism in Hong Kong," he added.
The roving exhibition has been staged in Tsim Sha Tsui, Tseung Kwan O, Yuen Long, Shatin, Kwai Fong and Causeway Bay since its opening on January 28.
"The exhibition, in a form of an interactive audio-visual display, has enjoyed warmth welcome from the public, with more than 150,000 visitors taking part in it," Dr Wong noted.
Apart from a variety of informative panels, there are display of models of Chinese white dolphin and finless porpoise, a video show on marine parks and marine reserve as well as interactive games for visitors to learn more on the diversity of local marine life.
"A selection of corals, specimens of shells and an endangered species, the green turtle, are shown on top of a sandy platform for the public to get a glimpse of the mysterious marine world," Dr Wong said.
The exhibition is organised in support of the Healthy Living into the 21st Century Campaign.
In his speech, Dr Wong extended special thanks to the Airport Authority Hong Kong for allowing the department to hold the exhibition at its departure hall.
