AFCD urges the public not to disturb humpback whale
Thursday, March 19, 2009

A spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) today (March 19) appealed to the public to refrain from sailing out to watch a humpback whale first sighted in the East Lamma Channel on March 16.

The spokesman said the humpback whale is a highly endangered species and people should respect this magnificent creature. Increased vessel traffic might cause disturbance and stress to the whale.

"For their own safety, visitors should avoid any close encounters with the 10-metre adult whale. There might be a potential risk of boat collision if the whale is being sought out and pursued on purpose."

All cetacean species are protected under the Wild Animals Protection Ordinance (Cap 170) and the maximum penalty is a fine of $100,000 and imprisonment for one year.

The department will step up patrols to prevent any harassment caused by whale-watching activities and will continue to monitor the whale's condition.
