Red tide sighting reported
Friday, June 16, 2000

An inter-departmental red tide working group today (June 16) reported a red tide sighting within Hong Kong waters to keep the public well informed of the latest monitoring situation.

A spokesman for the working group said a red tide formed by Prorocentrum dentatum was reported at Sha Tin Hoi between Ma Liu Shui and Ma On Shan on June 13, but it had dissipated on June 15.

The red tide species is non-toxic.

"It has been sighted in Hong Kong waters before but led to no associated fish kill," he said.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) had alerted mariculturists at Yim Tin Tsai Fish Culture Zone and they confirmed that fishes behaved normally.

The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon and AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on mariculture industry.
