Red tide sighting reported
Friday, July 7, 2000
An inter-departmental red tide working group today (July 7) reported a red tide sighting within Hong Kong waters to keep the public well informed of the latest monitoring situation.
A spokesman for the working group said red tide formed by Gonyaulax polygramma was observed near Yeung Chau, Sai Kung Hoi, Sai Kung by staff of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department on July 4, but it had dissipated on July 5.
The red tide species is non-toxic.
"It has been sighted in Hong Kong waters before but led to no associated fish kill," he said.
No fish culture zones nor any gazetted beaches were affected by the red tide.
The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on mariculture industry.
