Code for Visiting Geosites in Hong Kong launched
Friday, June 19, 2009

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has launched the "Code for Visiting Geosites in Hong Kong" to advise members of the public on hiking safety when visiting such sites.

"Hiking is a recreational activity which is good for both physical and mental health. To enjoy a safe and pleasant trip, hikers should make proper preparations before setting out," a spokesman for the AFCD said today (June 19).

Hong Kong boasts rich geological resources of high academic research, tourism and scenic value. These special geological sites and rock clusters attract many visitors.

"While enjoying the diversified landscapes, visitors should remain alert to changes in the surrounding environment and any potential hazards such as shifting or slippery rocks. They should not climb the rock columns or trample on severely weathered or eroded surfaces," the spokesman said.

He advised hikers to check weather conditions and plan their route carefully before setting out. "Always go hiking in company with others and with an experienced guide. Remember to tell family or friends the hiking route.

"Hikers should wear suitable hiking shoes, hats and clothes, and also take gloves, first-aid kits and weather-proof clothes with them. They should take precautions against heat strokes when hiking in hot weather. Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. Do not overstretch oneself."

The spokesman noted that hiking should be avoided when the weather conditions were unstable.

To step up publicity on hiking safety, the AFCD will hold seminars for hiking groups and tour operators in June and July to remind them to exercise extra caution in organising such activities. Warning signs will be installed at suitable locations. The AFCD will also deploy staff at popular geosites on public holidays to convey the message.

The "Code for Visiting Geosites in Hong Kong" and other information on hiking safety are available at the AFCD's website (www.afcd.gov.hk).
