Red tide sighting reported

An inter-departmental red tide working group today (August 25) reported a red tide sighting within Hong Kong waters to keep the public well informed of the latest monitoring situation.
A spokesman for the working group said a red tide formed by Hermesinum adriaticum was observed at Kat O Fisheries Substation of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) on August 18 and dissipated later the day.
The algal species belongs to silicoflagellates, a group of phytoplankton with internal skeleton made of silica.
"It is not commonly sighted in Hong Kong waters before and is non-toxic. No fish kill is associated," he said.
AFCD had alerted the O Pui Tong Fish Culture Zone in the vicinity. No gazetted beaches were affected by the red tide.
The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon and AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on mariculture industry.
