AFCD organises agricultural delegation to Hawaii
Thursday, September 7, 2000

The Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, Mrs Lessie Wei, hopes that participants of an agricultural delegation to Hawaii will make use of the opportunity to enhance their knowledge on the latest farming technologies with a view to contribute to the development of the local farming sector.

Speaking at a banner presentation ceremony to the delegation today (September 7), Mrs Wei said: "We choose to learn from Hawaii because of its experiences in using advanced technology in agriculture. Besides, its climate is similar to Hong Kong, with similar cultivable crops."

"Local agriculture is facing an immense competition in a free and globalised market. Farmers have to advance themselves in production technology in order to maintain competitiveness," Mrs Wei said.

The delegation's 11-day study tour would focus on greenhouse and organic production techniques in Hawaii. The programme was designed to be interesting, diversified and practical.

The group would visit government departments, research centres, horticultural farms, quarantine facilities, nurseries and floral gardens in the islands of Oahu, Hawaii (Big Island) and Maui.

Farmers would also have the chance to see the cultivation of some exotic economic crops and to assess the performance of pest-resistant crops under field conditions.

The 25-member delegation, comprising local farmers, advisory board members and government officials, would depart for Hawaii next Sunday (September 17).

The tour is organized by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department with assistance of the American Consulate General and the State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture.
