Red tide sightings reported
Friday, October 13, 2000

An inter-departmental red tide working group today (October 13) reported a red tide sighting within Hong Kong waters to keep the public well informed of the latest monitoring situation.

A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed on October 12 at Sha Tau Kok Hoi near Yung Shue Au by staff of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD). The red tide had dissipated today.

The red tide was formed by Scrippsiella trochoidea. It had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic.

AFCD had alerted mariculturists at Sha Tau Kok, Ap Chau, Kat O and O Pui Tong on possibility of oxygen depletion in the water. No fish kill was reported.

The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon and AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on mariculture industry.
