Red tide sightings reported
Friday, October 20, 2000
An inter-departmental red tide working group today (October 20) reported two red tide sightings within Hong Kong waters to keep the public well informed of the latest monitoring situation.
A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed on October 17 at Tolo Harbour near Tai Po Industrial Estate by staff of the Environmental Protection Department (EPD). It dissipated the next day.
The red tide was formed by Scrippsiella trochoidea. It had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic.
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) had alerted mariculturists at Yim Tin Tsai fish culture zone on possibility of oxygen depletion in the water. No associated fish kill was reported.
On October 18, staff of EPD also reported a red tide sighting at Shing Mun River. The red tide dissipated the next day.
The red tide was formed by Plagioselmis prolonga. It was not common in Hong Kong waters and was non-toxic.
The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon and AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on mariculture industry.
