Students invited to enter "Wetlands in My Eyes" contest
Saturday, October 10, 2009

Local secondary students are invited to participate in the 2nd "Wetlands in My Eyes" inter-school news reporting contest, with applications being accepted from today (October 10) to November 7.

To encourage students to better understand wetland ecology and the effects of climate change on the biodiversity of wetlands, the Hong Kong Wetland Park, Hong Kong Observatory, Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union and Ming Pao jointly organised the contest.

Participants must enter as a group of no more than four people under the guidance of a teacher. They are required to produce a news report under the theme "Wetlands, Biodiversity, and Climate Change" of World Wetlands Day 2010. They should also conduct an educational activity for at least one week at the schools, using their findings, and covering the activity in the news reports.

The contest was well-received last year with about 80 entries from more than 300 students.

The contest is divided into two categories: one for feature articles and photos and the other for video or audio pieces. Each category offers first, second and third prizes as well as three outstanding awards. Each winner will be awarded a trophy or certificate and a book coupon. The champion team will also be invited to visit wetlands on the Mainland.

Interested students should submit their application forms by post to Outreach Programme Unit, Education and Community Services Section, Hong Kong Wetland Park, Wetland Park Road, Tin Shui Wai, New Territories, or by fax at 2617 1158. Accepted applications will be notified by email. Their news reports should be submitted by December 19.

Results will be announced in mid-January 2010. Winners will be notified by mail. They will receive their prizes at the World Wetlands Day 2010 Hong Kong celebration ceremony next February.
