More investigation needed on chicken samples

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) will need more tests to ascertain if H5 avian influenza virus is present on a farm isolated by the department on October 20.
AFCD Assistant Director (Agriculture, Quarantine & Inspection), Dr Liu Kwei-kin said today (November 3): "We have collected additional chicken samples from the Yuen Long farm for further investigation. We need to conduct further tests to know whether there is any H5 infection on this farm."
"So far we have not isolated any H5 virus from the farm. We are going back for more samples to make sure that chickens in the farm are not at risk of being infected.
"Testing of samples from all 227 poultry farms indicates that only the initial farm in Yuen Long has shown evidence of possible exposure to H5 virus," Dr Liu said.
Dr Liu stressed that whatever the outcome of the definitive tests on this farm, chickens in the market do not pose any risk of transmitting H5 avian influenza to human.
"We will continue to examine and test every batch of chickens destined for market before they were sold," Dr Liu said.
