Hong Kong National Geopark Hiking Festival attracts 2,000 people
Saturday, December 5, 2009
About 2,000 people participated in the first session of the Hong Kong National Geopark Hiking Festival in Sai Kung today (December 5). The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has organised the Hong Kong National Geopark Hiking Festival today and tomorrow (December 6) to promote understanding and appreciation of the geological features and allow people to cherish the natural beauty of rocks in Hong Kong through hiking activities.
The Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, Mr Alan Wong, officiated at the ceremony at Pak Tam Chung to mark the start of the festival.
It began with the Sai Kung Geo Wonders Hike today with a theme of rock appreciation. The 11-kilometre route began at Pak Tam Chung, passing the West Dam of High Island Reservoir, and ending at the East Dam, where participants were greeted by the hexagonal volcanic column wall where geographical phenomena like faults, folds, twisted stone columns and vein intrusions are best appreciated at close proximity.
The fun continues tomorrow with the Double Haven Geo Wonders Hike with a theme on ecology and old villages with historical value. The 13-kilometre route starts at Bride's Pool and passes Wu Kau Tang, Sheung Miu Tin and Ha Miu Tin, where there are shade trees and streams. From Sam A Tsuen to Lai Chi Wo, well-grown mangroves can be found. The White-flowered Derris and buttress roots of Looking Glass Tree are must-see attractions.
Along the hiking routes, AFCD staff and volunteers will provide a fixed point tour guide service on the unique features of the geopark to enhance public enjoyment and awareness of geo-conservation.
Participants will be given a specially designed badge as souvenir.
The Hong Kong National Geopark, which covers about 5,000 hectares, was opened on November 3. It is made up of eight geo-areas across the Northeast New Territories Sedimentary Rock Region and Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region. AFCD has planned and designed eight land tour routes and two boat tour routes according to the geological characteristics and locations of various scenic areas. Visitors should pay attention to safety when visiting geo-areas. For more information, please visit http://www.geopark.gov.hk.
