Red tide sightings reported
Friday, November 24, 2000

An inter-departmental red tide working group today (November 24) reported two red tide sightings within Hong Kong waters to keep the public well informed of the latest monitoring situation.

A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed on November 17 at Tolo Harbour near Ma Liu Shui by staff of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

On November 19, a red tide sighting was also reported by mariculturists at Yim Tin Tsai fish culture zone.

The two red tides were formed by Scrippsiella trochoidea. It had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic. Both red tides still persisted today.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) had reminded mariculturists at Yim Tin Tsai fish culture zone on possibility of oxygen depletion in the water. No associated fish kill was reported.

The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon and AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on mariculture industry.
