AFCD will monitor supply of live chickens
Saturday, November 25, 2000

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) is maintaining close contact with Guangnan Hong, chicken suppliers and cross-boundary poultry lorry drivers to monitor the development of the strike staged by the chicken transporters.

The supply of live chickens is affected by the strike staged by the lorry drivers today (November 25) in protest against the levy of cage disinfection fee by the Shenzhen authority. The disinfection of chicken cages has been implemented at Man Kam To from yesterday.

A spokesman for AFCD said, "Guangnan Hong is assisting the parties concerned to maintain a dialogue with the Shenzhen authority to resolve the issue.

"The Shenzhen authority clarified that the cage disinfection fee will be charged to the mainland export companies, but not the cross-boundary lorry drivers, before December 1. It will continue to discuss with the relevant parties with a view to resolving who should be responsible for the disinfection fee.

"We will monitor closely the supply of live chickens. At noon today one lorry with 4,000 chickens has arrived at Cheung Sha Wan Temporary Wholesale Poultry Market.

"There are also sufficient chilled/frozen poultry in the market to cope with the demand for up to two weeks. We hope that the lorry drivers will stay calm and end the strike shortly," he added.
