Red tide sighting reported
Friday, December 22, 2000

An inter-departmental red tide working group today (December 22) reported a red tide sighting within Hong Kong waters to keep the public well informed of the latest monitoring situation.

A spokesman for the working group said a red tide formed by Noctiluca Scintillans was observed at Kat O Fisheries Substation of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) on December 17. It dissipated on December 20.

The red tide had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic. No associated fish kill was reported.

The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon and AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on mariculture industry.
