Red tide sighting reported
Friday, December 29, 2000
An inter-departmental red tide working group today (December 29) reported two red tide sightings within Hong Kong waters to keep the public well informed of the latest monitoring situation.
A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed at Kat O Fisheries Substation of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) on December 27. It still persisted today.
On the other hand, on December 28, a red tide was also observed at Tai Tan Hoi, Sai Kung by the public. It has dissipated today.
The two red tides were formed by Noctiluca Scintillans. It had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic. No associated fish kill was reported.
The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon and AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on mariculture industry.
