Draft map for Tung Ping Chau Marine Park for public inspection
Friday, December 29, 2000

The Country and Marine Parks Authority has prepared a draft map for the proposed Tung Ping Chau Marine Park for public inspection.

A Government spokesman said the draft map is now ready for inspection by the public for a period of 60 days according to a notice gazetted today (December 29).

The draft map is available for public inspection at the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) headquarters, Land Registry headquarters, Tai Po New Territories Land Registry, Lands Department's Survey and Mapping Office, Tai Po District Lands Office, Marine Department headquarters and Tai Po District Office.

Copies of the draft map are also available for sale to the public at $30 each from AFCD, Cheung Sha Wan Government Offices, sixth floor, 303 Cheung Sha Wan Road, Kowloon.

"Any person aggrieved by the draft map may send a written statement of his objection to the Country and Marine Parks Authority within 60 days from the date of gazetting. He should set out in the statement the nature of and reasons for the objection, and if the objection would be removed by an alteration to the draft map, any alteration proposed," the spokesman said.

The proposed Tung Ping Chau Marine Park, covering an area of about 270 hectares, is situated in the open waters surrounding Ping Chau in the northeastern part of Hong Kong.

"The waters around the island have extensive coral formation and seaweed bed. The coral formation, measuring 1.8 square kilometre, is one of the largest in Hong Kong. About 124 species of reef fishes have been recorded in that area. The coastline is further characterised by special sedimentary rock formations with features of geological interest.

"The designation of the proposed marine park will help to protect corals, marine and fisheries resources, and special coastal features," he added.
