Red tide sighting reported
Friday, January 19, 2001
An inter-departmental red tide working group today (January 19) reported a red tide sighting within Hong Kong waters to keep the public well informed of the latest monitoring situation.
A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed on January 17 at Shing Mun River by staff of the Environmental Protection Department.
The red tide was formed by Scrippsiella trochoidea. It had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic.
The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on mariculture industry.
