Red tide sightings reported
Saturday, January 27, 2001

An inter-departmental red tide working group today (January 27) reported two red tide sightings within Hong Kong waters to keep the public well informed of the latest monitoring situation.

A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed on January 19 at Deep Water Bay by staff of Ocean Park. The red tide, formed by Chaetoceros socialis, was not common in Hong Kong waters and was non-toxic. It had dissipated the next day.

On the same day, a red tide was observed at Kat O Hoi by mariculturists at Kat O fish culture zone. The red tide was formed by Noctiluca scintillans. It had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic. It had dissipated on January 21.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) had reminded mariculturists at Kat O fish culture zone on possibility of oxygen depletion in the water. No associated fish kill was reported.

The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon and AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on mariculture industry.
