Mountain Biking Safety Day to be held this Sunday
Friday, December 2, 2011

To promote mountain biking safety and the shared use of mountain bike trails in country parks by both bikers and hikers, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) and the Hong Kong Cycling Association will jointly hold the Mountain Biking Safety Day at Twisk Management Centre in Tai Lam Country Park this Sunday (December 4).

Members of the public can learn more about mountain biking and safety advice and guidance through exhibition panels and a demonstration of mountain biking techniques and the use of protective gear at the event. By creating a safe environment, bikers and other country park users can share the use of trails and enjoy the countryside.

At the launch ceremony of the event, the gold medallist of the men's cross-country cycling event at the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, Mr Chan Chun-hing, will share his cycling experience and demonstrate how to ride a mountain bike in a safe manner. To promote the proper use of mountain bike trails and common courtesy and mutual respect among hikers and bikers, AFCD staff and volunteers will distribute leaflets to passers-by.

With the concerted efforts of the local mountain biking communities and AFCD staff, a new mountain bike facility has been set up at the trailhead of Ho Pui Section Mountain Bike Trail of Tai Lam Country Park. The new facility consists of a 200-metre Green Practice Loop (for beginners) and a 200-metre Blue Escape Route (for riders of intermediate skill level). The purpose-built mountain bike practice loops have adopted the International Mountain Bicycling Association's standards for sustainable trails.

The facility provides an excellent opportunity for visitors to experience mountain biking and test their skills before moving on to the mountain bike trail in Tai Lam Country Park. Visitors with mountain bike permits issued by the AFCD are welcome to try the practice loops. For details, please visit www.afcd.gov.hk.

The Mountain Biking Safety Day will be held from 9.30am to 3pm this Sunday at the Twisk Management Centre, Route Twisk, Tai Lam Country Park. The launch ceremony will start at 11am. Admission is free.

Participating organisations include the Hong Kong Hiking Association, China; the Federation of Countryside Activities; the Friends of the Country Parks Hiking Club; and the Hong Kong Mountain Bike Association.
