AFCD suspends import of cloven-hoofed animals from the Netherlands
Thursday, March 22, 2001
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) announced today (March 22) that it had suspended the import of live pigs, cattle, sheep and goats from the Netherlands in view of the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) there.
An AFCD spokesman stressed that the ban was a precautionary measure for the prevention of the introduction of new strains of FMD virus into Hong Kong.
"FMD is an animal disease which is not a public health hazard. It is an endemic disease occurring in pigs in South East Asia, including Hong Kong.
"AFCD reminds pig farmers every year to take precaution against the disease which can best be controlled here by vaccination," he said.
