Red tide sightings reported
Friday, March 23, 2001

An inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (March 23) two red tide sightings within Hong Kong waters to keep the public well informed of the latest monitoring situation.

A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed on March 21 at Ma Wan by staff of the Environmental Protection Department. The red tide was formed by Skeletonema costatum and is dissipating.

Another red tide was observed yesterday (March 22) at O Pui Tong by staff of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD). The red tide was formed by Gonyaulax polygramma. It still persisted today.

The two kinds of red tide had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and were non-toxic.

Staff of AFCD had alerted respectively mariculturists of the nearby Ma Wan and O Pui Tong fish culture zones, and reminded them on the possibility of oxygen depletion in the water. No associated fish kill was reported.

The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon. AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry.
