Red tide sighting reported
Friday, March 30, 2001

An inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (March 30) a red tide sighting within Hong Kong waters to keep the public well informed of the latest monitoring situation.

A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed on March 25 at Tai Tan Hoi, Sai Kung by members of the public. It dissipated the next day.

The red tide was formed by Gonyaulax polygramma. It had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic.

The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry.
