A three-day knowledge sharing workshop for Asia Pacific Geopark managers hosted by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) concluded successfully today (December 5).

An AFCD spokesman said, "It is the first workshop organised among the Asia Pacific Geoparks Network. It provides a platform for participants to share knowledge and experience so as to enhance the quality of geopark management as well as its popularity."

More than 20 representatives of Asian geoparks and academics participated in the workshop, which focused on volcanology and basic geology. They also had useful exchanges on their knowledge of volcanology and park sign systems, as well as on their experience of geopark management. Professor Setsuya Nakada of the University of Tokyo, who is an expert in volcanology and geology, shared his research results at the workshop.

The delegation visited the High Island Geo Trail in Sai Kung, Hong Kong Geopark Hub and Hong Kong Science Museum. In addition, representatives of Aso Geopark of Japan today paid a visit to a Hong Kong school which has joined the Geopark Schools programme and had a sharing session with the teachers and students there.

The Geopark Schools programme aims at encouraging teachers and students to develop a long-term interest in science, ecology and culture, and to explore the links between science and art through interesting activities, with a view to arousing their interest and understanding of geology. More than 10 schools have become geopark schools since the launch of the programme in 2012.
