An inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (May 18) three red tide sightings within Hong Kong waters to keep the public informed of the latest monitoring situation.
A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed on May 14 at Hung Shing Ye Beach, Lamma Island by staff of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Red flag was hosted immediately. The red tide dissipated later the day and red flat was lowered the following day.
A red tide was also observed on the same day at Deep Water Bay near Ocean Park by staff of Ocean Park. The red tide had dissipated the following day.
The two red tides were formed by Noctiluca scintillans. It had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic.
Besides, a red tide was observed on May 16 at Ma Wan fish culture zone and Yam O by staff of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD).
The red tide was formed by Skeletonema costatum. It had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic. The red tide had dissipated the following day.
AFCD had reminded mariculturists of the Lo Tik Wan, Sok Kwu Wan and Ma Wan fish culture zones on the possibility of oxygen depletion in the water. No associated fish kill was reported.
The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon. AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry.
