AFCD completes slaughtering operation in local farms
Wednesday, May 30, 2001

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) completed an operation to slaughter mature poultry in local farms, with a total number of 951,502 birds destroyed in the past 10 days.

The operation, which started on May 21, covered all local poultry farms and concluded today (May 30). Some 755,000 chickens, 117,000 pigeons and 79,000 quails were destroyed in the process. They were sent to the landfills at Nim Wan and Ta Kwu Ling for disposal.

The Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, Mrs Lessie Wei, thanked poultry farmers for their support and co-operation throughout the operation.

"Although there was no sign of avian flu infection among poultry in local farms, poultry reaching marketable size could not be released for sale due to the closure of all retail outlets. The Government, therefore, decided to slaughter these poultry," she said.

AFCD visited a total of 223 poultry farms during the exercise. Fifty-two farms were found to have no poultry reaching marketable size. Eight other farmers decided to keep their birds.

AFCD has mobilised more than 720 staff for the slaughtering operation. On average about 310 staff took part in the exercise each working day.

Mrs Wei commended the staff for their hard work and efficiency despite the hot weather, enabling an early completion of the task.
