Some 1,000 volunteers join Marine Parks Clean-Up Day
Sunday, September 16, 2001

More than 1,000 volunteers from 19 organisations and green groups participated in the Marine Parks Clean-Up Day organised by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) today (September 16) in support of the International Coastal Clean-Up Day.

AFCD Senior Marine Parks Officer Mr Edward Wong said the volunteers joined hands to remove fishing gear and rubbish left on seabed and coastal areas of the Hoi Ha Wan, Yan Chau Tong, Sha Chau and Lung Kwu Chau Marine Parks, the Cape D' Aguilar Marine Reserve, and a planned marine park at Tung Ping Chau.

"Abandoned fishing gear and refuse on seabed, if not regularly cleaned up, may trap and kill marine life such as crabs and sea urchins. Catch of fishermen will also reduce.

"With the removal of the refuse, it will help preserve marine resources and improve marine environment at marine parks and reserve," Mr Wong said.

Also attending the function, Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Mrs Lessie Wei thanked the volunteers for their support for the clean-up exercise.

"The clean-up exercise helps promote co-operation among AFCD, green groups and other voluntary organizations in conserving marine environment," she said.

Similar clean-up campaigns were conducted by AFCD since 1996. Last year, about 11 tonnes of abandoned fishing gear and rubbish were removed and disposed of.
