Red tide sighting report
Friday, September 21, 2001
An inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (September 21) a red tide sighting within Hong Kong waters to keep the public informed of the latest monitoring situation.
A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed on September 14 at Yim Tin Tsai fish culture zone by mariculturists of the culture zone.
The red tide was formed by Prorocentrum minimum and Scrippsiella trochoidea. The two species had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and were non-toxic. Short period of low dissolved oxygen was recorded at bottom seawater during the red tide. The red tide had dissipated on September 18.
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) had reminded mariculturists of the Yim Tin Tsai, Yim Tin Tsai (East) and Yung Shue Au fish culture zones on the possibility of oxygen depletion in the water. AFCD only received report of a small amount of fish kill from a mariculturist of Yim Tin Tsai fish culture zone.
The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon. AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry.
