Red tide sightings report
Friday, November 30, 2001

An inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (November 30) three red tide sightings within Hong Kong waters to keep the public informed of the latest monitoring situation.

A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed on November 23 at eastern waters of Hong Kong by staff of the Environmental Protection Department.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) had notified mariculturists of fish culture zones in Sai Kung of the red tide sighting, and reminded them to observe closely the condition in their fish culture zones. No associated fish kill was reported.

Meanwhile, a red tide was observed by Ocean Park staff in Deep Water Bay. The red tide dissipated on November 26.

These two red tides were formed by Mesodinium rubrum. It had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic.

Another red tide was observed at Shing Mun River on November 28 by staff of the Environmental Protection Department.

The red tide was formed by Prorocentrum minimum. It had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic.

The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon. AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry.
