Red tide sightings report
Friday, January 18, 2002
An inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (January 18) nine red tide sightings within Hong Kong waters to keep the public informed of the latest monitoring situation. All the red tides were formed by non-toxic species and had dissipated.
A spokesman for the working group said four cases of red tides were formed by Mesodinium rubrum. Two of them were observed on January 12 at the waterway between Ma Wan to Tuen Mun, and on January 13 at western waters of Siu Mo To. Two other red tides were observed on January 14 on northern waters of Lamma Island, and on January 15 at south-western waters of Hei Ling Chau.
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) had reminded mariculturists of the Ma Wan fish culture zone on the possibility of oxygen depletion in the water. No associated fish kill was reported.
The spokesman said another four red tides were formed by Noctiluca scintillans. Two of them were observed on January 13 and 16 at Silverstrand Beach. The other sightings were observed on January 13 at Kat O Hoi near Lai Chi Wo, and on January 15 at Ngo Mei Wan.
Meanwhile, a red tide was observed on January 15 at Hau Hoi Wan near Sheung Pak Nai. It was formed by Thalassiosira weissflogii.
Mesodinium rubrum and Noctiluca scintillans had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before while Thalassiosira weissflogii was developed into a red tide in Hong Kong waters for the first time.
The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon. AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry.
