Red tide sightings report
Friday, February 22 , 2002
An inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (February 22) two red tide sightings within Hong Kong waters to keep the public informed of the latest monitoring situation.
A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed on February 18 at Shing Mun River near Jat Min Chuen by staff of the Civil Engineering Department. Staff of the Environmental Protection Department reported yesterday that the red tide had moved to Fo Tan.
The red tide was formed by Prorocentrum minimum. The species had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic. The red tide still persisted this morning.
The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry.
