Red tide sighting report
Friday, April 12, 2002

An inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (April 12) two red tide sightings within Hong Kong waters to keep the public informed of the latest monitoring situation.

A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed on April 4 at Yim Tin Tsai fish culture zone by staff of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD). The red tide dissipated on April 9.

The red tide was formed by Heterocapsa circularisquama. The species is relatively rare in Hong Kong waters and was non-toxic.

AFCD had reminded mariculturists of the Yim Tin Tsai, Yim Tin Tsai (East) and Yung Shue Au fish culture zones on the possibility of oxygen depletion in the water. No associated fish kill was reported.

Another red tide was observed on April 6 at Hung Shing Ye Beach, Lamma Island by staff of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Red flag was hoisted immediately. The red tide dissipated the following day and red flag was then lowered.

The red tide was formed by Mesodinium rubrum. It had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic.

The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon. AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry.
