Red tide sightings report
Friday, April 26, 2002
An inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (April 26) five red tide sightings within Hong Kong waters to keep the public informed of the latest monitoring situation.
A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed on April 22 at Deep Water Bay near Ocean Park by staff of Ocean Park. The red tide dissipated on April 24.
On April 23, red tides were observed by staff of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the Environmental Protection Department respectively at Kwun Yam Wan Beach, Cheung Chau and Stanley Main Beach.
The red tide at Stanley Main Beach dissipated later the day while the red tide at Kwun Yam Wan Beach dissipated the following day.
Red tides were also observed by LCSD staff on April 24 at Hung Shing Yeh Beach and Lo So Shing Beach on Lamma Island. The two red tides dissipated yesterday.
All the red tides were formed by Noctiluca scintillans. The species had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic.
The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry.
