Red tide sighting report
Friday, May 3, 2002

An inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (May 3) a red tide sighting within Hong Kong waters to keep the public informed of the latest monitoring situation.

A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed on April 29 at Silver Mine Bay Beach, Lantau Island by staff of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Red flag was hoisted immediately. The red tide dissipated the following day and red flag was then lowered.

The red tide was formed by Noctiluca scintillans. It had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic.

The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry.
