A chicken farm in Kam Tin re-opens
Wednesday, May 8, 2002

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has given approval to a chicken farm in Kam Tin to reopen today (May 8) after it has met all the new biosecurity arrangements.

The farm has been depopulated and placed under quarantine since February because of the avian influenza incident. The farmer has then carried out thorough cleaning and disinfection at the farm, an AFCD spokesman said.

"Inspections by our veterinary staff found that the farm has met all our stringent hygiene requirements and new biosecurity measures. Sentinel birds sent to this farm have been tested negative for H5.

"We therefore decided to rescind the 'infected place' order. This would allow the farmer to restock the farm with chickens.

"Other farms in the vicinity have completed cleaning and disinfection work and they all met our hygiene standards. Consideration will be given to reopening these farms after the farmers have upgraded the biosecurity facilities," the spokesman said.
