World Orienteering Day Carnival to be held this weekend
Tuesday, May 16, 2023

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) announced today (May 16) that the department and the Orienteering Association of Hong Kong (OAHK) will hold the World Orienteering Day Carnival on May 20 and May 21 at Tai Tong Barbecue Area (Site No. 1, 6 and 7) in Tai Lam Country Park. Members of the public are welcome to take part in the activity.

An AFCD spokesman said, "The event aims to promote orienteering in country parks. Participants will experience the fun of nature from a new perspective, and also have a better understanding of hiking etiquette."

Sprint orienteering experience, orienteering mazes, string orienteering for kids and a series of "Hiking Etiquette in Action" game booths will be available at the Carnival. Furthermore, members of the Hong Kong Orienteering Team will introduce basic orienteering techniques on site. The event is open to all members of the public (participants aged 5 or below should be accompanied by a parent or guardian when taking part in the activity) and requires no preregistration or admission fee. Participants should enrol on site from 10am to 4pm on event days. The AFCD will provide free shuttle bus services between Yuen Long MTR Station and Tai Tong Barbecue Site No. 1.

In order to promote orienteering, the AFCD and the OAHK jointly designed different orienteering courses in country parks with poles set as control points for public use. Seven orienteering courses are currently available in country parks and the newly designed course at Tai Tong will be launched on the event day. Orienteering course maps can be downloaded from the thematic website (www.natureintouch.gov.hk/en/web/nit-web/what-is-orienteering). Members of the public can also pick up an introductory leaflet on the nearby orienteering courses at country park visitor centres.

Details and latest information of the activities are available on the Nature in Touch website (www.natureintouch.gov.hk/en/wodcarnival) and the Hong Kong Country Parks Facebook page (www.facebook.com/hongkongcountryparks/).
